For my Independent Learning Project, I decided to interview a teacher about the technology she uses in the classroom. Last year, my best friend graduated from Florida State University with a degree in Education, and right after graduating, she became a teacher in her hometown, Bradenton, Florida. Through FSU's education program, she taught many classes and utilized the resources that the school had to offer, and I was interested to see how the resources that she used while interning were different than the resources she had now. Following is the interview that I conducted with Ms. Jaclyn Dombroski. Me: So what technologies do you use for teaching in the classroom? Do you have a SMART board? Jaclyn: Actually no; I did with my internships and I wish I had one but they don't give them to Pre-Kindergarten classes in my district. Me: How did the SMART board help you with teaching? Jaclyn: It was so helpful to better lessons and get students involved, like for example using G...

Many of the class pages include the class objectives, quick links for the websites used in class, assignments, contact information, and announcements for the class. This class is for Nyack Middle school for Mrs. Peterson's 7th grade math class. When I teach, I plan to use my phone calendar and to-do list in order to stay organized and up-to-date with assignments and due dates. I also plan to use Google Drive in order to keep all of my files and documents in one area. Working both at school and at home can be difficult when it comes to documents because often times you have documents on various computers and it is difficult to stay organized. By using Google Drive, I would have all of my documents in one spot and it would be much more easy to access. Unfortunately, last week I was sick and could not make it to the Tech Sandbox but the things I was most looking forward to was the SMART board and the Apple TV. I have seen teachers use a SMART board before but it was very brief a...

I think that blog websites and YouTube are both examples of useful Web 2.0 sites. I think that blogging gives students an opportunity to journal and say what is on their mind about the lesson or just anything in general and it can be beneficial not only for the student but also for the teacher. The teacher may learn things about her students and maybe even ways to improve his or her lesson plans. I think YouTube can be helpful in classroom settings because there are a lot of educational and important videos on YouTube that can be utilized for teaching. There are some things only videos can teach and videos are usually more well-liked by students. What I do not think is a useful website for learning are social media sites. On social media, it is very common for people to spew out their beliefs, whether they are accurate or inaccurate and they are very rarely ever educational or beneficial to learning in any way. I believe that social media is something that should be used in your person...

It has been really interesting seeing what my peers have to say on Twitter. My initial thought of this Twitter assignment was that it was going to be all of my peers tweeting about things about the class, things about FSU Education, and all things educational. What I have come to find is that it is much more fun than that. It is cool to see the funny things that people tweet, and how they perceive this class and these tweeting assignments. I have been getting favorites on my tweets from my professor and my other classmates, and ironically enough, I get more notifications on my FSU EdTech Twitter than I do on my personal Twitter. This assignment has been beneficial to me because it has opened my mind to different Twitter accounts that interest me and it has showed me how to stay updated with a group of people that are working on the same topic as I am. This could be helpful in the future because many businesses are using Twitter as a way to communicate with one another and staying updat...

I feel most prepared to teach aligned with college and career expectations among the ELA Standards because I think that college has taught me a lot about being independent and responsible for my own work and realizing that in the real world, there isn't going to be anyone to baby you and to remind you about due dates. I think that in elementary through high school, my teachers didn't do the best job of forcing us out of our comfort zone and making us do things on our own. As students, we often relied on each other and our teachers to remind us of upcoming due dates and we weren't as independent as we should have been. When college came around, it was somewhat of a culture shock for me, so when I become a teacher I would put an emphasis on independence and teaching students to be more responsible on their own. One thing that will require more learning on my part would be to build upon the strengths and lessons of our current state standards. As of right now, I do not know th...
