Technology has become a very important part of everyday life. It is important for students to be knowledgeable about technology, therefore teaching technology in the classroom is vital. Students must understand their role in society and their opportunities to expand their knowledge to the technological world. Students want to learn technology because it has become such a significant part of their generation. Teachers want to teach their students technology because it can improve their digital literacy skills.

the ISTE Standards are set in place so that students can learn the always-evolving technology in the classroom. These standards are put in place to show what is important for students to know and to learn about technology and what is an integral part of development within technology. One of the standards that is meaningful to me is the "Global Collaborator". This is important to me because last summer, one of my best friends decided to study abroad and I knew I wasn't going to be able to talk to her as much as I did when she lived 5 minutes away from me. When she left to go to Italy, we made sure to get an application on our iPhones that would allow us to text and communicate as much as possible. It is really important to me that you are able to communicate not only with people that live right down the street from you, but also that you can communicate with people all over the world. It is important that students are taught these resources because it can expand their knowledge and communication so much. One standard that seems to be outside of my current skill set would be "Creative Communicator". I feel that I am skilled in basic forms of technology like Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, but when it comes to more creative ways of communicating technologically, I am not as skilled. For example, last semester, for one of my projects, we were told to use Prezi. I had heard that it is similar to PowerPoint, but in my opinion it was much harder to navigate. Every time I was confused about something, I had to watch a tutorial to figure out how to do it. In my eyes, being a "Creative Communicator" means that you can learn new creative ways of communicating on your own and using these to your benefit, which I feel I cannot do.

A digital native is someone who was brought into the world in the age of technology and so therefore are more familiar with things such as computers, cell phones, etc. I would agree with this term, "digital native" because nearly all people who were born in my generation have both a cell phone and a laptop/computer of some sort. We grew up using computers and technology, so it was almost impossible to not at least be minimally familiar with these things. My parents always tell me that back in their day, when they were in school, they couldn't just Google research and questions that they didn't know. If they didn't know something, they had to go to the library and look it up in a book. If the kids in my generation had to do that now, I think a lot of them may not do as well in school. I have noticed, too, that teachers and adults in older generations who are considered to be digital immigrants, frequently end up asking the students and children how to use technology because they are not as familiar with it as we are. I think that sometimes that adds a gap in learning because the teachers may lose their sense of superiority in the classroom. I have since seen many technological advances even since I have graduated high school. Granted my professors still use technology, I have seen the Smart Boards that elementary students are using and even I don't fully understand how to use those. I think that technology will continue to advance and this may still result in a gap between the students and the teachers, but as long as the teachers are still learning and opening their minds to new things, students will still be learning new things and opening their minds to new technologies.
